Protein Bread

Hi everyone,

As most of you know, the protein craze has been building for quite some time now, and with countless protein fortified products flooding the market, there was one in particular that caught my eye a little while ago.

Labelled as “Protein Bread”, this tasty looking loaf is beginning to gain respect among the low-carb or high protein dieters of the nation; But is it really worth the hype or is this yet another food fad, falling victim to proteins rapid rise in fame?

On the surface this may look like your typical loaf of bread; That is until you read the nutrition information panel. In just two slices it manages to pack in a whopping 16.4g of protein (That’s the equivalent of a small can of tuna!). However, on the flip side, the bread is very low in carbohydrate, with only 2g per serve – regular breads in comparison have on average 30g of carbohydrates and 6-7g of protein per serve (2 slices).

Protein bread has a low GI, as well as a low glycemic load as a result of the low total carbohydrate content, thanks largely to the breads high fibre and protein make up.

Lower GI foods take longer to digest and be absorbed, leading to more stable rises in blood sugar levels. This helps us to fill fuller for longer and is important for diabetics who need to avoid rapid rises in their blood sugar levels. Protein Bread is also gluten free making it suitable for those with gluten intolerances of coeliac disease.

So what are the top nutritional advantages of this bread? Well firstly it is a rich source of protein which is great for strength, growth and all round body maintenance. It is also filling, leaving you satisfied and less likely to over indulge on other refined or nutritionally poor products.

However, its worth noting that being priced at $14.90 a loaf, this can be a rather expensive way to get your protein in. It also lacks the nutrients iron, zinc and magnesium, which other natural sources of protein would typically contain (such as eggs, meat and legumes for example).

Price aside, Protein Bread does offer convenience to certain groups such as athletes and diabetics. The bread can either be enjoyed on its own or in a range of healthy snacks or light meals. Some examples are listed below:

  • Toasted with nut butter and slices of banana
  • Topped with feta and avocado
  • Topped with ricotta, sliced strawberries, walnuts and honey
  • Or served alongside a bowl of vegetable soup

While Protein Bread does offer certain advantages, it is likely to be an unnecessary expense for most. I could see myself enjoying it to be completely honest, but for those not wanting to spend on it, there are definitely far more affordable and nutritious ways to incorporate protein into the diet.

I have actually dined at the cafe in Sydney that created the bread, and I loved lots of the meal options on their menu!
