Dietitians Guide to Healthy Eating in Manhattan August 15, 2017 NYC A Dietitians Guide to Healthy Eating in Manhattan Hey everyone, As a dietitian with a clear love for travel and healthy food, I receive a lot of questions about the best places to dine when travelling and also the best gut healthy places; However, of all the questions asked, the one that is most frequent is definitely: “where should I go to eat healthy food in New York City?” In a city with 24,000 restaurants, delis, late night pizza and sushi bars, The Big Apple certainly has its options… Obviously, not all of them serve gut-strengthening nutrients, vitamin packed goodies, and of course my favourite prebiotic and probiotic rich foods. So I decided rather than put together a list of healthy restaurants, I’d create a super quick foodie walking tour of some of my absolute favourite places to go, including what I would recommend trying, and why! I discovered recently this awesome app called Sidewalk – The Sidewalk Guide app allows anyone to build a walk, and act like a tour guide for those interested in the topic, and therefore it seemed perfect! I have taken some of my fellow Facebook/Instagram friends on healthy food tours when they have been in town, but I felt having something like this in an app could help more people gain the experience too! Sidewalk is an app that delivers self-guided walks that are created by anyone…and in this case, a dietitian! ? There are all sorts of self-guided walks in the Sidewalk app – architecture, history, cocktails, culture – all created by an expert in the field, or someone who is totally on top of that particular neighbourhood. I thought it was pretty cool when I came across it, as it smoothly navigates you from place to place and then tells you stories to appreciate at each one – Plus bonus point for it being free! The tour I created is obviously healthy culinary-focused (no surprises there!); It’s called: “Healthy Food Tour of Greenwich Village: Vegan Tex Mex, Coconut Froyo & Artisanal Coffee.” It’s all about finding inspiration; some of my favourites that I take you along to include healthy fresh fast food venues created by celebrity chefs, some organic, some vegan, some specialty shops, some absolutely instagram worthy restaurants, and all completely delicious! I used to live in Greenwich Village, just steps away from most of these places, and despite moving slightly uptown, I am still a regular at each of these places whenever I get a chance. As a bit of a taste test- We start the foodie crawl with a seed-packed sourdough bread from the farmer’s market in Union Square, then I lead you to my favorite spots for coconut milk froyo, single-source espresso coffee, incredible smoothies, and the best quinoa taco salad in the city…and I wouldn’t be Australian if I didn’t point out a delicious smashed avocado toast along the way 😉 Whether you are visiting New York or are a local – Check out a preview of my walk and download the app here. Then, let me know what you think of the tour on my Facebook. Until next time, TD x
