My New Life in NYC: Fumaric Acid, Illegal ‘Hostels’, Accents. October 24, 2013 NYC …and so it begins, my second NYC adventure, or as some may refer to it as more simply..Travelling Dietitians life. Healthy eating made seriously easy at wholefoods Healthy eating made seriously easy at wholefoods Healthy eating made seriously easy at wholefoods Healthy eating made seriously easy at wholefoods Lets summarise the last 5 days in a few dot points shall we: Staying in a luxury doorman building in Trump towers on Central Park thanks to a gorgeous colleague and now good friends kind nature. Seeing fumaric acid in like every second product on the shelf (I swear I don’t think I ever saw this ingredient in Australia). Illegal hostel style apartment living filled with amazing MBA bound international women all taking a chance and living in the moment. Waking up on Wall St and feeling the electric buzz of the financial district during office hours. Lebanese men who make proposals to me whilst I wait for my dinner to be cooked in their food vans, and who walk me through their Moroccan Jewish heritage in order to win over my grandparents (because apparently that would somehow change my mind about the situation). Too many (scratch that, never too many!) double chocolate chunk all natural quest bars consumed. Even more omega 3 enriched food products and dairy free alternatives popping up at the supermarkets. Hundreds upon hundreds of emails sent out around apartments, majority of which came back as scammers insisting on a deposit being paid prior to one actually seeing an apartment. Being shown the seriously competitive nature of the NYC real-estate market..and coming out on top! Landing my number one preference with two gorgeous young woman only three days after arrival! That exciting moment when you get your new apartment keys to start the next chapter of your life and get to hang them on your going away gift from your mother all the way from Israel! Still not knowing the correct tipping etiquette in this country, with some cab drivers absolutely loving me (which I then realise is because I actually gave them around a 35% tip!), followed by others absolutely hating me (which I too then realise I have tipped abnormally, only those times the tips are closer to about 1%!)…possibly need to start focusing on my maths a little more! Catching about four subways to get somewhere that really should have just taken one thanks to a lack of knowledge of the subway routes, and a continual inability to get into my own i-tunes account and download some clearly needed subway maps! Sitting in the park with the sunshine on my face (and a big smile on my face), thinking..wow, this is my life, good girl Kara, good girl (yes I admit I do refer to myself in third person at times, it’s just part of the charm, or so I like to think!). Just one of the many random signs outside the different food venues here! Anyway, there is far more I can share, but I think that is a nice start to show you the variance in entertainment, living conditions, and day to day events that take place over here. What more can I say, than that it has only been 5 days, and it already feels like I have been here for a life time. Everything feels very familiar, but in a new light…and I couldn’t be happier. Cute baked goods with ingredients and information at union square market I’ll be sure to update you all again soon, Stay tuned on facebook for more of my food product finds and interesting photos I snap throughout my days here in the city.
